How to start 5K training in the UK — couch to parkrun

5K training fails when week one is heroics. Walk-run beats ego.

Eight moves. Eight weeks. One parkrun.

  1. Pick a parkrun. Find the nearest Saturday. Put it in the calendar eight weeks out.
  2. Shoes that fit. Not £200 racers. Comfortable trainers you will actually wear.
  3. Walk-run weeks 1 to 3. One minute jog, two minutes walk. Repeat. Pride later.
  4. Same three days. Tue, Thu, Sat. Missed day means next slot, not double punishment.
  5. Route from the door. No driving to a scenic trail. Friction kills consistency.
  6. Rain plan. Waterproof top. UK weather is not a reason — it is the default.
  7. Log only distance. Time and feel. No public shame posts until week six.
  8. Sunday reset link. Pair this with the Weekly Training Plan so sessions stay on the calendar.
