How to write a CV personal profile (with UK examples)

The personal profile is the short paragraph at the top of your CV. It is the first thing a hiring manager reads, and often the only thing they read before deciding whether to keep going. Here is a simple formula, examples you can adapt, and the mistakes that make profiles sound the same as everyone else’s.

What a good profile does

Keep it to three to five lines. No life story, no hobbies, no list of adjectives.

The three-sentence formula

  1. Who you are: "[Adjective that you can prove] [job title] with [X years] of experience in [area]."
  2. Your proof: "[Something you achieved or are trusted with], [a key skill from the advert]."
  3. What you want: "Now looking for a [job title] role where I can [what you will bring]."

Examples you can adapt

School leaver or no experience: "Hard-working school leaver with GCSEs in English and Maths and a Saturday job in a busy café, where I handled the till and served up to 200 customers a day. Reliable, quick to learn and happy working weekends. Looking for a full-time retail or hospitality role with training."

Retail: "Customer assistant with four years of experience in high-street retail, trusted to open and close the store and train new starters. Regularly hit add-on sales targets. Now looking for a supervisor role where I can lead a small team."

Care: "Caring and dependable support worker with three years of experience in domiciliary care, holding a Level 2 Diploma in Health and Social Care and a full UK driving licence. Confident with personal care, medication prompts and care notes. Looking for a senior carer role."

Admin or office: "Organised administrator with six years of experience supporting busy sales and operations teams. Manage diaries, invoices and customer records accurately in Excel and CRM systems. Looking for an office manager or senior administrator role."

Career changer: "Former hospitality manager moving into HR, with eight years of recruiting, rota planning and training staff, and currently studying for a CIPD Level 3 qualification. Looking for an HR assistant role where my people experience is useful from day one."

Manager: "Operations manager with ten years of experience running warehouse sites of up to 60 staff. Improved pick accuracy and cut agency spend through better rota planning. Looking for a site or regional operations role."

Only claim results you can talk about at interview. If you have a real number (team size, targets, budgets), use it. If you do not, describe what you are trusted with instead.

Make it match the job

Read the advert and pick out the job title and the two or three skills it repeats. Put the job title in your first or last sentence and work one or two of those skills into the middle. Many employers use software that scans CVs for these words, and a human reader notices the match too.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a CV personal profile be?
Three to five lines, or roughly 50 to 120 words. It sits at the top of the CV, so the reader should get the point in a few seconds.
Should a CV profile be written in the first or third person?
Either works in the UK if you are consistent. Many people drop the pronoun altogether, for example "Reliable warehouse operative with five years of experience", which reads cleanly and avoids sounding stiff.
Do I need a personal profile on my CV?
It is not compulsory, but it helps, especially if you are changing careers, returning to work or applying for lots of different roles. It tells the reader who you are and what you want before they read the detail.
What is the difference between a personal profile and a personal statement?
On a CV they mean the same short summary at the top. A personal statement for a university or an application form is much longer and answers set questions, so do not paste one into the other.
Should I change my profile for each job?
Yes, at least slightly. Swap in the job title you are applying for and one or two skills from the advert. It takes a couple of minutes and makes the CV look written for that job.
