Mother of the bride speech: a simple structure and template

A good mother of the bride speech is short, warm and personal. Here is a seven-part structure, a template you can copy and fill in, and tips for delivering it on the day.

The 7 parts

  1. Thank everyone for coming. Welcome guests, mention anyone who travelled far, and thank the other family. If you are co-hosting, a short thank-you to the people who helped fits here too.
  2. Say who you are. One line: "For those who don’t know me, I’m Sarah, Emma’s mum." Keep it light.
  3. Share one or two stories about your daughter. Pick a childhood moment that still says something about who she is now: stubborn, kind, funny, brave. One good story beats a timeline of her life.
  4. Welcome her partner. Say what you noticed when you first met them and what you have seen them bring out in her. Be specific and warm.
  5. Talk about them as a couple. A moment when you knew they were right together, or something they do for each other. Keep it kind; save the teasing for the best man.
  6. Offer one piece of advice or a wish. One line is enough: a family saying, a short reading, or a simple wish for their marriage.
  7. Raise a toast. Ask everyone to stand and raise a glass: "To Emma and James." Then sit down while they are still smiling.

Template you can copy

Swap the brackets for your own details, then read it aloud and cut anything that doesn’t sound like you.

Good afternoon everyone. For those who don't know me, I'm [name], [bride]'s mum.

Thank you all for being here, especially [anyone who travelled or helped]. And [other family], thank you for welcoming us so warmly.

[Bride] has always been [quality]. When she was [age], [short story that shows it]. Today I can see that same [quality] in the woman she has become.

[Partner], the first time [bride] brought you home, [what you noticed]. Since then I have watched you [what they bring out in her], and I could not be happier to welcome you into our family.

Together you [something they do for each other]. My only advice is [one line].

Please stand and raise your glasses. To [bride] and [partner].

Frequently asked questions

How long should a mother of the bride speech be?
Three to five minutes is plenty, roughly 400 to 650 words at a relaxed pace. Short and heartfelt beats long and rambling.
When does the mother of the bride speak at a UK wedding?
Traditionally the father of the bride, the groom and the best man give the speeches. Many couples now include the mother of the bride too, often first, straight after the father of the bride, or in his place. Ask the couple where they would like you.
Should I mention people who have died?
A short, gentle mention is fine if the couple are happy with it, for example "We know Grandad would have loved today." Check with the bride first and keep it to one or two lines.
Can I read my speech from cards?
Yes, most people do. Large print on small numbered cards is easier than a phone, and lets you look up between lines.
